Basic Fieldcraft

Camouflage & Concealment - Why are things seen?

Shape

Head and shoulders of a person is clearly recognisable.  This outline can be broken up.  ( Use foliage, scrim net etc to break up the shape)

Surface / Shine

This includes shine.  Even dark objects can have a shine that reflects light of them.  Any surface that doesn’t blend in with its surrounding can be seen. (use cam cream/mud to dull out any shine on skin, dull boots with polish)

Silhouette

Heads and shoulders above the horizon or over walls etc are seen easily. (keep low across high ground, look round rather than over objects)

Shadow

Even when you are concealed behind a wall, the sun can still cast a shadow and give your position away.  It’s not just the sun that casts a shadow, the moon does too.  (be aware of where you shadow is cast and adapt your position)

Spacing

Nothing in nature is evenly spaced.  So when patrolling, its best to keep an uneven spacing throughout the patrol.

Sound

Making a sound will draw the enemies attention to the direction that the sound came from.. This will make them look harder in that direction and see you!

Movement

Similar to sound, sudden movement can attract attention, so the enemy look harder.  There are various different movements that reduce the chance of you being seen.

Kitten crawl – for use close to the enemy.  Very slow and quiet

Leopard crawl – for movement close to the enemy, but quicker and noisy than kitten

Ghost walk – for use walking through woodland etc when visibility is poor

Combat roll – for moving from high ground quickly

Monkey run – for moving from a to b quickly close to the ground
